Some parasites known to feed on human blood are lice, mosquitoes, fleas, bed bugs, ticks, mites, triatoma, and babesia.

The host is the organism which the parasite gets its nourishment from in order to live. Animals and humans can receive an infection from the parasites. Many parasites live outside the host, as in the skin or hair, but there are also parasites, like Babesia, that live inside the host's body. Parasites may thrive on the host's blood or tissue. It is important to know which parasites feed on human blood to avoid infection.

Lice

Lice are among the most common parasites that can infest people. Such creatures are able to live during the whole of their life, on human's blood. Lice are very small and wingless insects with six legs. Most often found on the scalp, they can also be found in other body areas containing hair.

Mosquitoes

Modern day vampires are more associated with those annoying little bugs we call mosquitoes than there latter day namesake. Mosquitoes are also regarded as pests. To pierce the skin of their hosts, the mouth parts of a mosquito is adapted. After piercing the skin, they inject their saliva, that acts like an anti-coagulant, and then it begins to absorb blood. Dengue hemorrhagic fever and the West Nile Virus are the diseases which are known to be transported by a few of the mosquitoes.

Fleas

Fleas are commonly brick red in color and have flat bodies. They have the ability to jump over 100 times their own height, which translates to about a foot high. Household pets like dogs and cats are usually their home but they can infest humans.

Bed bugs

Tiny brown insects that like linens and cool dark places received the name bed bugs because they are commonly found in old mattresses. These insects are active at night and generally suck blood from their victims at dawn.

Ticks

Because they attach to the skin, ticks are known as epidermal parasites. By injecting their pinchers, they begin to gorge themselves on blood. After they have their fill of nourishment, they will detach from the host. Ticks are known to carry infections and many serious illnesses like Lyme disease.

Mites

Mites are known to burrow deep into the hair follicles found on the skin of humans. Acne is caused by a similar source Mites may infect any of the individual; even then the aged persons fall prey to this microscopic organism more often.

Triatoma

The triatoma are blood-sucking organisms that belong to the Reduviidae family of predatory insects. Kissing bugs or tritoma are referred to this as they often bite sleeping humans on the lips. They can take a bite out of the areas of the eyes comprised of soft tissue Chagas disease can be spread by some of these species.

Babesia

The Babesiosis ailment is caused by a parasite of the blood, known as Babesia. Those infected with Babesiosis suffer malaria-like symptoms. This is the reason why some cases of Babesiosis are wrongly diagnosed as malaria.
